I remembered this treaty well. They then told me that the copy of the treaty my father had signed with Potgieter had been lost and now they wished me to sign one exactly like the one my father had signed.

They gave me a paper and I signed it. One of them then asked me for an impi to fight Khama, the King of the Bamangwato, and the other asked to be allowed to live in the country. I refused both requests.”

“Just pause for a moment, I wish to put some questions to you,” said Mzilikazi.
“As my father pleases.”

“Had you not been advised that in your
dealing with the white man, you must never sign anything because since you could not read what they wrote on their paper,
you would not know what you were, in fact, signing?”
“I had been so advised, by my father, and, as a matter of fact, until this occasion I had never agreed to sign anything.”
“Why then did you sign?” ...
