We can define reality as the totality of all existences therefore consciousness and material phenomena are just two sides of the same coin called reality and reality cannot be caused to come into existence because cause and effect functions on thing in reality and not on anything outside of reality and nor can it function on nothingness, therefore what exist always existed and will always exist, therefore there is no first cause because there is no such thing as a first reality. But consciousness is the knowledge existence within reality because if you take away awareness reality could not be known to exist. So, now we have to ask is consciousness the substrate existence of reality since it is the existence that allows us to know that reality exist. The way I see it, awareness is the substrate existence of material phenomena because without awareness animating our senses the mind and intelligence could not function to provide us material sensual experiences therefore their value and purpose are in relation to the self and not to themselves.

But it would be impossible to experience an existence that is the substrate existence of awareness since awareness would be the basis of that experience. Thus, we can say consciousness is not just that which makes reality known but it is also absolute existence knowing itself to exist. So, while reality is the totality of all existences that have no beginning nor end there is this relationship of absolute existence and relative existence within reality. and God represents that absolute existence within reality by being the ultimate existence that all the material universes take shelter in. While we as conscious being represent finite expressions of God.
