Endangered Species
Beneath the scorching sun,
Scattered like frightened birds,
Across borders that mock our pain.
Why won't they?
Who thirsts by the riverside?
We kneel before men,
We sacrificed our thumbs to,
Only to inherit silence,
And sirens of stammering promises.
Who is safe?
Left in the hands of bandits
Who parade terror like kings,
While "HELP" reverberates from forest den.
Do we truly have leaders,
Or tourists in agbada?
Travelling and borrowing,
Seasons after seasons.
Where are our balls?
Wrapped between our legs in juggled frustration.
From AM to PM,
Hunger is no longer an emergency;
It is culture,
A second skin,
A national anthem,
Sung by empty pots,
Who were gifted rice.
So, from sea to desert,
From embassy queues to detention camps,
Chasing hope like thirsty souls.
Stamped, profiled, humiliated,
While our vampires watch our ordeals,
Like spectators in an air-conditioned cinema.
A brilliant people,
Sharp-minded and energetic,
Whose children must abandon home to stay alive.
A giant with bleeding knees and a stubborn faith.
If resilience were currencies,
Nigerians would own the earth.
