As I reflected on the unfortunate abductions of pupils and staff of 3 primary schools in Oriire LGA of Oyo State last Friday my thoughts went to the late Gov Akeredolu of Ondo State.
I'm not from Ondo or even the S/West for that matter. But I admired the way he championed the establishment of the Amotekun in that region to tame the incipient terrorism in his state in particular and the rest of the region in general. The then FG fought him for it but he stoutly fought back. He aimed to rout criminal herders out of all forests in Yoruba land.
Unfortunately the other states bought the idea only halfheartedly. In fact Lagos opted out all together.
To worsen matters the then Tinubu, with his eyes firmly on the presidency didn't want to be seen to be fighting certain interests so was lukewarm to the initiative.
Even at that had Aketi not fallen sick shortly after and subsequently died, with the singleminded way he went about Amotekun, the story would most probably have been different today considering that his state, Ondo is a buffer state between the North Central and the rest of the S/West.
Today terrorism has laid its bed in that region too. Unfortunately.
I pray God comfort all loved ones of the slain teacher and rescue all those in captivity.
