Negotiations between Chelsea and Xabi Alonso advanced quickly and a full agreement was struck shortly after the final whistle in the club’s defeat by Manchester City in the FA Cup final.

While Chelsea have not promised Xabi Alonso full control, he will be given a more meaningful role in the club’s decision making than some of his predecessors. Chelsea want to sign two or three ready-made players to boost their squad.

Chelsea players are said to be excited by the prospect of Xabi Alonso’s appointment.
