Nigerians Must Hold Governors, Senators, House of Representatives Members, State Assemblies, and Local Government Chairmen Accountable Not Focus All Anger Only on the Presidency
For too long, many Nigerians have directed nearly all their anger, frustration, and expectations toward the Presidency whenever hardship, insecurity, poor infrastructure, unemployment, or poverty increases. While the President carries major national responsibility, the truth is that Nigeria’s problems cannot be solved from Abuja alone.
Nigeria is a federation. Power, money, and constitutional responsibilities are shared among federal, state, and local governments. Therefore, if Nigerians truly want development, accountability must begin at every level of government especially with governors, senators, House of Representatives members, state assembly lawmakers, and local government chairmen.
Most of the suffering Nigerians experience daily is directly connected to failures at state and local government levels.
Governors Receive Massive Allocations but Many States Show Little Progress
Every month, state governments receive huge federal allocations, internally generated revenue, security votes, and intervention funds. Yet many states still have:
Bad roads
Poor public schools
Dilapidated hospitals
Unpaid salaries and pensions
Rising youth unemployment
Insecurity
Poor rural development
Lack of clean water and electricity
The question Nigerians must ask is: What exactly are many governors doing with these funds?
In many communities, federal presence is limited. The nearest roads, schools, hospitals, markets, and security structures are controlled by state and local governments. If these fail, ordinary citizens suffer immediately.
Local Governments Are the Closest to the People but Often the Weakest
Local governments were created to bring development directly to grassroots communities. They are responsible for:
Primary healthcare
Local roads
Sanitation
Rural markets
Primary education support
Community development
Waste management
Yet in many local governments across Nigeria, citizens cannot point to meaningful projects despite billions allocated over the years.
Many local government chairmen operate without transparency because citizens rarely demand accountability from them. Some communities do not even know how much allocation enters their local government monthly.
This silence has allowed corruption and underdevelopment to continue unchecked.
Lawmakers Must Also Be Held Responsible
Many Nigerians only remember senators and House of Representatives members during elections. After elections, citizens rarely demand performance reports.
Lawmakers are elected to:
Make laws
Represent citizens
Oversight government spending
Influence federal projects into their constituencies
Defend the interests of the people
Yet many constituencies still lack:
Good roads
Skills acquisition centers
Water projects
Hospitals
Functional schools
Citizens should ask:
How many bills has my senator sponsored?
What projects has my representative attracted?
How are constituency funds being used?
How often do they engage the people?
State Assemblies Must Stop Acting as Rubber Stamps
State Houses of Assembly are supposed to check governors and protect public interest. Instead, many assemblies simply approve everything presented by the executive without serious scrutiny.
If state assemblies properly investigate budgets, loans, and expenditures, many abuses of public funds would reduce significantly.
Democracy Cannot Work Without Citizen Accountability
One major reason corruption survives is because many politicians know citizens rarely follow up after elections.
Nigerians must move from emotional politics to accountability politics.
Instead of focusing only on:
Presidential speeches
Federal appointments
Abuja politics
Citizens should also demand:
State budget transparency
Local government spending reports
Constituency project updates
Public procurement details
Monthly town hall meetings
Development Happens Faster When Leaders Are Closely Monitored
When public officials know citizens are watching, they become more careful with public funds.
Accountability creates:
Better governance
Reduced corruption
Faster project completion
Improved public services
Better education
Stronger healthcare systems
More jobs
Safer communities
If Nigerians begin to seriously monitor governors, lawmakers, and local government officials, the pressure on the federal government will reduce naturally because development will spread across all levels.
