The Structural Crisis of the Nigerian Economy
Nigeria’s economy is trapped in a cycle of mutually reinforcing problems:
High inflation
Currency depreciation
Energy instability
Weak infrastructure
Rising unemployment and underemployment
Declining real wages
Low industrial productivity
Weak linkage between education and industry
Policy inconsistency
High cost of doing business
Businesses face skyrocketing production costs — diesel, electricity, logistics, FX volatility. Many spend more on power than on actual production. So they cut labor costs because it’s the only adjustable variable left.
Workers, meanwhile, face unbearable living costs. So they see low wages as exploitation. Employers see wage demands as unrealistic.
Both sides are right.
