Your Esteemed Excellencies, 240 million Nigerians are writing to express our concerns regarding the recent judgment in which the Federal High Court in Abuja sentenced Halima Haliru Umar to 20 years’ imprisonment for unlawful possession of 302 rounds of AK-47 live ammunition and attempting to render support for acts of terrorism.

While we understand the importance of enforcing the law, we are deeply troubled by what appears to be a broader issue of prioritization in the fight against insecurity. boko haram, a terrorist organization responsible for widespread violence, mass casualties, and displacement of Nigerians since 1999, continues to operate with far more sophisticated weapons and has inflicted immeasurable harm on communities across the country for decades

It is difficult for 240 million Nigerians to reconcile the swift and decisive action taken in this case with the longstanding lack of accountability for those who have perpetrated far greater atrocities. This discrepancy contributes to a perception that the justice system is not addressing the most urgent threats facing the nation.

Respectfully our intention is not to undermine the court’s authority but to urge a more balanced and strategic approach—one that prioritizes the apprehension and prosecution of those who have caused the greatest suffering. 240 million Nigerians deserve to see meaningful justice applied consistently and effectively.

We respectfully request that the judiciary and relevant security agencies intensify efforts toward bringing boko haram members and other major perpetrators of violence to justice. Only then can public confidence in the justice system be strengthened.
