This fact is actually true, and it reflects Japan’s rapidly aging population and falling birth rate.

Since around 2011, sales of adult diapers in Japan have reportedly exceeded sales of baby diapers. Major companies like Unicharm and Oji Holdings even shifted more focus toward elderly care products because demand from senior citizens became larger than demand for infant products.

Japan has one of the world’s oldest populations. Nearly 30% of its citizens are over 65, while the country’s birth rate continues to hit record lows. In 2023, Japan recorded only around 758,000 births, one of the lowest numbers ever recorded in the country’s modern history.

Because there are fewer babies being born each year, the market for baby products has shrunk. At the same time, longer life expectancy has increased demand for adult diapers, nursing care items, and elderly healthcare products.
