After years of training adults (and surviving the "work-front vortex" myself), I've learned that two techniques consistently turn passive listeners into active participants.

1. Real Q&A (not the fake kind)
Ask open-ended questions. Direct them to everyone, not just the eager volunteers. And please—no "pseudo-questions." Adults smell a scripted answer from a mile away.

2. Brainstorming with actual rules
One golden rule: NO criticism during ideation. Not a raised eyebrow. Not a "hmm, interesting but…" Quantity first. Judgment later.

The result? Energy shifts. People lean in. Ideas flow.
