Why no African country is debt‑free every African nation uses debt as part of its economic system. Debt is not inherently bad — it finances infrastructure, education, health, and development — but it becomes a crisis when repayment becomes unsustainable.

This means African countries are struggling to reduce debt, not eliminate it.

Which African countries have reduced or restructured debt?
While none have paid off all debt, several have made progress through restructuring, relief, or repayment agreements:

Somalia secured a $306.5 million debt restructuring deal with the Arab Monetary Fund in 2025.

Angola, Kenya, Egypt, Chad, Ghana, Ethiopia, Zambia, and others are actively restructuring debt to reduce burdens and extend repayment timelines .

These actions reduce pressure but do not eliminate debt.
