Your Excellencies President Tinubu, Opposition Leaders and Independent Candidates, 240 million Nigerians are writing to express a concern shared by many Nigerians regarding the Federal Government’s newly announced policy mandating compulsory drug testing for secondary school students.

While the intention to curb drug and substance abuse among young Nigerians is understandable, it raises an important question of fairness, accountability, and responsible use of public funds.

If secondary school students are to undergo mandatory drug testing, then it is only reasonable that all leaders, all elected officials, political appointees, and candidates across all parties be held to the same standard. Leadership must lead by example, and accountability should begin at the top respectfully.

At a time when Nigerians are struggling with economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment, and failing infrastructure, it is difficult to justify spending taxpayers’ money on policies that do not address the root causes of our national challenges.

Instead of allocating funds to mass drug testing of students, our tax money should be directed toward:

Providing free, quality education across all 36 states and 774 LGAs

Addressing the root causes of boko haram and other security crises

Creating sustainable jobs and economic opportunities

Ensuring free 24/7 365 days electricity in the 36 states 774 LGA

Expanding access to free or affordable internet and digital tools

These are the investments that build a stronger, safer, and more prosperous Nigeria.

Drug abuse among young Nigeria is a symptom of deeper systemic issues—poverty, hopelessness, unemployment, and lack of access to quality education. Until these root causes are addressed, punitive measures alone will not solve the problem.

We urge you, as leaders and representatives of the Nigerian people, to speak up on this matter and advocate for policies that prioritize education, job creation, security, and national development over projects that do not meaningfully improve Nigerian’ lives.

Nigeria deserves leadership that is transparent, accountable, and focused on real solutions.
