The Sociological Imagination

The sociological imagination is the ability to see the link between personal experiences and wider social forces.

"Deviance means breaking social norms, while crime means breaking laws. Not every deviant act is a crime, and not every crime is seen the same way in every society. Strain theory says deviance may happen when people cannot reach accepted goals by legal means. Labeling theory says people may become deviant when society labels them as criminals or bad, and they begin to act according to that label. The criminal justice system does not always treat everyone equally, because structural inequality can affect arrest, trial, and punishment."
