Your Excellency, Governor of Lagos State, 240 million Nigerians are
writing to express deep concern regarding the recent arrests of Nigerians for waste dumping in unauthorized locations. While maintaining a clean and healthy Lagos is essential, arresting Nigerians for waste-related infractions appears to be a misplaced priority when compared to the urgent security challenges facing the nation.

Groups such as boko haram—responsible for severe harm, loss of life, and human rights violations—have continued to threaten Nigerians for decades. Redirecting enforcement energy toward combating such threats would better protect Nigerians and strengthen national stability.

The individuals arrested for waste dumping are products of systemic gaps. Without adequate public waste disposal systems, accessible public toilets, and reliable waste management infrastructure, 240 million Nigerians/ residents have limited options. Addressing these root causes is more effective than punitive measures.

We respectfully urge the state to consider the following:

Release the arrested individuals and instead assign them to a one-month paid public sanitation program. This approach promotes dignity, provides income, and reinforces civic responsibility.

Expand job creation by employing 240 million Nigerians in large-scale environmental maintenance and infrastructure development.

Invest in modern waste disposal systems, public toilets, and community sanitation facilities across Lagos.

Prioritize nationwide security efforts and strengthen initiatives aimed at combating violent extremist groups.

Implement long-term strategies to provide free education, vocational training, and essential services such as housing and healthcare.

Hold corrupt officials accountable and ensure transparent governance.

Nigeria’s population—over 240 million strong—deserves visible progress, not slogans or unfulfilled promises. True leadership begins with addressing systemic issues and empowering 240 million Nigerians with opportunities, skills, and security.

The world is watching, and Nigerians are hopeful for meaningful change.
