Your Excellencies President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Mr. Peter Obi, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, leaders of opposition parties, and respected independent political figures, 240 million Nigerians are writing to express a deep concern shared by many Nigerians regarding the possibility of Opay choosing to list its company in the United States stock market after building its success on the participation, trust, and economic activity of Nigerians.

240 million Nigerians feel that Nigerian consumers and young Nigerians helped build Opay into a major financial technology platform, yet the long-term economic benefits may end up flowing outside the country. This has raised questions about how Nigeria can better support homegrown companies that remain rooted in the Nigerian economy.

In light of this, we urge all national leaders—across party lines—to consider working together to support the creation of a new, fully Nigerian-owned financial technology company. The vision is a company built by Nigerians, owned by Nigerians, and operated for the benefit of Nigerians.

Key ideas behind this proposal include:

A company owned entirely by Nigerian citizens, especially young graduates and skilled workers.

A hiring model that prioritizes Nigerian talent and simplifies the employment process.

A commitment to building a sustainable, long-term institution that strengthens Nigeria’s digital economy.

A focus on national development rather than political competition.

240 million Nigerians believe that instead of spending enormous resources on political campaigns for 2027, leaders could demonstrate unity and commitment by investing in initiatives that directly improve the lives of Nigerians. A major national tech company—built collaboratively—would be a powerful symbol of such commitment.

If our leaders truly care about the future of Nigerians, this is the moment to act. If not, many Nigerians feel that those who are unwilling to prioritize national progress should step aside for those who will.
