During a school run some time ago, while waiting for the children to come down to the parents’ gathering area, I overheard some women discussing their marriages. One bragged about how her husband did most of the house chores, while the other complained that her own husband did nothing at home.

Curious, I later discovered that the "helpful" husband was unemployed at the time, while his wife was the busy breadwinner. That explained why he took on most of the domestic duties.

I became concerned about the second lady, since she was an acquaintance, and I could see how deeply the conversation affected her. While speaking with her privately, she revealed that her husband was actually a successful lawyer who provided everything for the household and had even set her up with a shop, at her request, just to keep her busy. When she demanded that he also help with chores, he suggested hiring domestic staff instead, which led to conflict.

I told her that different marriages work differently and that comparing relationships without knowing the full story is rarely wise. It’s also not healthy to overshare personal marital issues with strangers, because it can damage what you already have.

Comparison without full context often leads to unnecessary dissatisfaction and problems in relationships.

Do what works for your home. No two relationships are the same.

Blessing Ojoma Onakpa: Your perspective is spot on. It is so easy to fall into the trap of comparison, especially when people only share a small slice of their reality.
CSO intl: That’s why comparison can be dangerous. It creates pressure, dissatisfaction, and unnecessary conflict where there should be peace and appreciation. Not every man will express support the same way, and not every woman’s situation is identical.
Cephason Skycruz Kings: This is such an important reminder. Many people compare marriages based on surface appearances without understanding the responsibilities, sacrifices, and arrangements behind the scenes. What works peacefully in one home may create tension in another.
Cephason Skycruz Kings: A relationship is not a competition. Some people share chores because of availability, while others contribute in different ways financially, emotionally, or through support systems. Wisdom is knowing your reality and building a system that brings peace to your home.
Cephason Skycruz Kings: Comparison steals gratitude, and oversharing private marital matters can sometimes create unnecessary pressure and dissatisfaction. Every healthy marriage is built on understanding, communication, and agreement between the couple involved — not public opinion.

Mild Uchenna: This scenario is so true and most of us can relate. Comparison is good but it becomes dangerous when context is missing. Every relationship has its own structure sacrifices and understanding that outsiders may never fully see.
Comfort Yako Asala: There 'maybe' an acceptable guide to successful marriage universally, however, every couple must compromise on what works for them.
Comparing your marriage and insisting it must work as that of others is nothing short of an anomaly
No two relationships or marriages are the same 💯
Great advice you...
Gladden Ngozi: Do what works for you, no two relationships are exactly the same.
Chizoba Ezunu: Absolutely 💯
West Midland Abbey: Comparison can damage many things. when the reasons behind a husband's actions are not understood, that is when the real challenges begin. Understanding truly matters in this context.
