Greetings Honorable Minister Tunji Alausa, 240 million Nigerians
write to commend you for the decisive and much‑needed policy stating that any university that does not offer active Ph.D. programs is prohibited from awarding honorary doctorate degrees. This action is a strong step toward restoring integrity, credibility, and academic excellence within our higher education system.

240 Nigerians have long been concerned about the commercialization and abuse of honorary degrees. Your leadership in enforcing this standard shows commitment to quality and accountability. We also urge that universities which have collected money for honorary degrees without meeting the required Ph.D. standard be mandated to refund those funds. This will reinforce fairness and discourage future violations.

Furthermore, we believe that funds recovered or redirected should be used to strengthen our universities. Improving infrastructure, supporting research, and enhancing student welfare would have a meaningful impact. For example, providing students with a monthly stipend of at least ₦300,000/monthly and ensuring job placement readiness before graduation would greatly improve outcomes and reduce unemployment.

Lastly, we encourage a national conversation on the relevance of the current NYSC structure. 240 million Nigerians feel it no longer serves its original purpose and consumes valuable time that could be redirected toward career development.

Thank you once again for your bold leadership and commitment to educational reform. Your actions inspire confidence in the future of Nigeria’s academic system.
