Boko haram’s founder, Mohammed Yusuf, was killed in 2009 while in Nigerian police custody, and multiple credible reports show his death was an extrajudicial execution rather than a lawful killing. This killing — widely seen as a major policing failure — helped trigger the full‑scale Boko Haram insurgency.

What happened to Mohammed Yusuf?
Yusuf was captured alive by the Nigerian military during the July 2009 uprising in Maiduguri and handed over to the police.

Police then executed him outside their headquarters, claiming he was “shot while trying to escape.” However, video evidence and eyewitness accounts contradicted this, showing he was killed in custody.

His killing was immediately criticized as an unforced error and a violation of due process.
