SENATE REVERSES SELF ON OATH TAKING & VOTING OF PRESIDING OFFICERS

Barely two days after amending its standing rules limiting the eligibility of senators for
principal offices -, including the Senate Presidency to two term senators who must have served in the 10th Assembly, the Senate in a dramatic twist on Thursday reversed its earlier action relating only to the amendments made to Order 2(2) and Order 3(1) of the Senate Standing Order 2026.

It is important to note that this reversal has nothing to do with the controversial Order 5(a) that limits eligibility of the Senate Presidency and other Principal officer positions to 10th Assembly members who are re-elected into the 11th Assembly.

In taking the action, Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, moved the motion to rescind controversial amendments citing constitutional inconsistencies and the need to preserve the integrity of the upper chamber’s legislative framework.

Opeyemi in his lead debate said the Senate, after “further legislative and constitutional review,” discovered that amendments introduced under Order 2(2) and Order 3(1) could conflict with provisions of the 1999 Constitution, particularly Section 52.

The Senate Leader added that the chamber must ensure its rules remain consistent with constitutional provisions, parliamentary conventions, and legislative practice.
