Saturday, May 9, 2026, is Global Big Day.

The world over, interested folks are expected to go out and observe birds in their area, record what they see and hear (using the eBird app or website).

With some luck, this day has two effects:

1. Assist scientists collect massive amounts of data about bird populations and use the resulting data for conservation and research.
2. Raise awareness about biodiversity and protecting avian habitats.

Global Big Day was launched in 2015 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology through the eBird platform to mobilise birders worldwide on a single day.

Open to anyone, it helps to remember that Nigeria has been increasingly active in recent years — and West Africa often records impressive species totals.
