A real frustration for decades 240 million Nigerians share, but the statement the first lady will never go to jail if found guilty of corruption is not accurate as a rule — and it’s worth breaking down why.

Short answer no one should be above the law in Nigeria, but in practice, powerful individuals — including first ladies, governors, ministers, and party leaders — are rarely prosecuted. This is a failure of institutions, not a legal impossibility.

What the law actually says Nigeria’s constitution and criminal laws do not grant immunity to the first Lady. Only these officials have constitutional immunity while in office:

President

Vice President

Governors

Deputy Governors

The First Lady is not on that list. So legally, she can be investigated, charged, and jailed.
