AWAKENING
While we watched in utmost admiration, the Western world lifestyle masquerading itself as civilisation stylishly incursed and eroded Africa's most cherished culture, norms and values:
Virginity becomes taboo,
Nudity is openly applauded,
Rags are now the best clothes,
Chastity of marriage is no more,
Men now plait their hair,
Women trade modesty for momentary validation,
Children are raised by screens instead of elders,
Respect is mistaken for weakness,
And discipline is labelled as oppression.
The sacred becomes ordinary,
The ordinary becomes obsolete,
And the foundation once built on honour, slowly cracks beneath borrowed identities.
We laugh at our own heritage,
Mock our languages,
And abandon the wisdom of our forefathers
In pursuit of a version of progress that forgets its roots.
Yet, beneath the noise of imitation,
There still lies a quiet truth—
That a tree without roots cannot stand,
And people without identity cannot thrive.
Perhaps civilisation was never meant to erase us,
But to refine us—
Not to replace our values,
But to strengthen them.
And maybe, just maybe,
