Fuel was about ₦198–₦200 per litre in Nigeria just before President Tinubu removed the subsidy on May 29, 2023.

What this means right before the subsidy removal, petrol was selling at roughly ₦198–₦200/litre, a price maintained under the previous administration. Immediately after Tinubu’s announcement that “fuel subsidy is gone”, the pump price jumped sharply to ₦617/litre, marking one of the fastest price increases in Nigeria’s fuel history.
