Chapter Seven: The Campaign of Shadows
The election season did not begin with noise.
It began with whispers.
Articles began appearing - questioning Amina’s credibility.
“Who is funding her?”
“Is she truly independent?”
“Can someone so young be trusted with power?”
On television panels, analysts spoke in careful tones that carried sharp implications.
“She is promising a lot,” one said. “But governance is not activism.”
Social media turned volatile.
Supporters defended her fiercely.
Opponents attacked relentlessly.
But Amina remained focused.
“Stay on message,” she told her team. “We are not here to fight noise. We are here to build clarity.”
Her rallies grew larger.
In Kano, thousands gathered.
In Kaduna, the crowd spilled into surrounding streets.
Young people wore NDP colors proudly, chanting messages of change that once felt impossible.
For the first time, established politicians began to feel something unfamiliar:
Pressure.
But pressure produces reaction.
And reaction, in politics, is rarely clean.
One night, Tunde rushed into her office, his face tense.
“We have a problem.”
Amina looked up from her notes.
“What is it?”
“There are reports—unconfirmed—but spreading fast.”
“What kind of reports?”
He hesitated.
“Financial misconduct.”
Amina frowned.
“That’s not possible.”
“I know,” he said quickly. “But that won’t matter if people believe it.”
The next morning, it was everywhere.
Headlines.
Breaking news.
Trending hashtags.
“NDP Leader Under Investigation for Fraud.”
The story was detailed.
Too detailed.
Documents.
Transactions.
Foreign accounts.
It looked real.
Convincing.
Manufactured.
Amina sat in silence as her team argued around her.
“This is a setup.”
“We need a statement immediately.”
“We should sue.”
“We should counter-attack.”
She raised her hand.
The room fell quiet.
“They want us to react emotionally,” she said.
“So what do we do?” Tunde asked.
Amina exhaled slowly.
“We respond with truth.”
But truth, she would soon learn, is not always the loudest voice.
