Chapter Six: When Power Takes Notice
Power, Amina would learn, does not panic loudly.
It observes first.
Calculates.
Then responds with precision.
The New Dawn Party was no longer a curiosity- it had become a disruption.
What began as youth gatherings had evolved into structured rallies. Their message was spreading beyond universities into markets, rural communities, and civil spaces long ignored by mainstream politicians.
And most dangerously
People were beginning to believe.
The first sign came as an invitation.
Amina sat across from Chief Bako in a well-furnished office that smelled faintly of leather and control.
He was a seasoned politician—one of those men whose name had outlived multiple administrations.
“My daughter,” he began, smiling in a way that did not reach his eyes, “you are doing well.”
“Thank you, sir.”
“I admire your courage. Truly.”
Amina waited.
There was always a “but.”
“You see,” he continued, leaning forward slightly, “Nigeria is not as simple as your Oxford books may suggest.”
Amina held his gaze.
“I never assumed it was.”
He chuckled.
“Good. Then you understand that real change… takes alignment.”
“Alignment?” she echoed.
“Yes,” he said smoothly. “Partnership. Guidance. Structure.”
“And control,” Amina added quietly.
The room shifted.
For a brief moment, the politeness thinned.
Chief Bako’s smile tightened.
“You are young,” he said. “You do not yet understand how power works.”
“Then help me understand,” Amina replied calmly.
He leaned back.
“Join us,” he said. “We will support you. Position you. Protect you.”
Amina didn’t hesitate.
“No.”
The word landed like a stone.
Chief Bako studied her carefully now—not as a child, not as a curiosity, but as something else.
Something inconvenient.
“That is not a wise decision,” he said.
Amina stood.
“Respectfully, sir, neither is underestimating a generation that is tired of waiting.”
From that moment, the tone changed.
Subtly at first.
Then deliberately.
