Just as Watchman's ministry was gaining spiritual momentum, he was dealt a hard blow. Leland Wang and other close coworkers politely informed him that he was no longer welcome to worship with them. They also asked him not to attend the January holiday convention in Foochow that pulled together believers from all over the area, an event that Watchman had helped to organize.
The anti-Christian movement (an outgrowth of political China's hatred of all things "western" after the Boxer Rebellion) was reaching a new peak to match the recent evangelistic activity- and much of the criticism was being focused on Watchman. "It is time for us to separate, To-Sheng," said the Wangs. "It will be easier for us without you."

Watchman knew in his heart that the leaders (including many western missionaries) were already being pressured by the government to compromise on several issues, and they knew Watchman would never do so. It was more expedient to move this "radical" preacher to the periphery of the movement. Even though he understood these motives, he was devastated by the betrayal of his friends."

Christians denouncing each other over politics, progressive ideas ruining theology, and governments trying to muzzle religious convictions are nothing new. It has all happened before, in another time and place. God is still God and truth is still truth.
