Why U.S. troops are in Nigeria
Several sources confirm that the U.S. deployment is limited, advisory, and requested by the Nigerian government:

A small U.S. military team is in Nigeria to provide counterterrorism support, intelligence sharing, and coordination after recent jihadist attacks. This is not a large‑scale occupation.

About 200 U.S. personnel were deployed to enhance Nigeria’s counterterrorism capabilities, focusing on training, technical support, and intelligence fusion at bases in Benue, Kainji, and Maiduguri.

Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters stated that this cooperation is formal, mutually agreed, and respects Nigeria’s sovereignty, focusing on capacity building and intelligence sharing.

Analysts note that U.S. involvement increased after U.S. airstrikes on IS‑linked targets in December 2025.
