Tyres don’t have a “written expiry date” like food, but they do have a manufacturing date, and that’s what you use to know if a tyre is still safe.
🔍 How to check your tyre date
Look at the side of the tyre for a code that starts with DOT (Department of Transportation).
At the end of that code, you’ll see 4 digits like:
2322 → means the tyre was made in the 23rd week of 2022
📅 How to know if it’s expired
Tyres are generally safe for up to 5–6 years from the manufacturing date
After 6 years, performance drops (even if it looks new)
After 10 years, it should not be used at all
⚠️ Important signs your tyre is bad
Even before 5 years, replace if you see:
Cracks on the sidewall
Bulging
Frequent air loss
Weak grip (especially on wet road)
🔧 Real talk (especially in Nigeria 🇳🇬)
Because of heat, bad roads, and heavy load:
Tyres can wear out faster (3–4 years)
Tokunbo tyres may already be old before you buy them
