The most recent publicly reported figures indicate that about 9.87 million Nigerians are unemployed, based on the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) methodology used in 2024.

What this number means the NBS reported an unemployment rate of 4.3% in Q2 2024, which translates to approximately 9,870,000 unemployed Nigerians

This figure includes:

Nigerians who lost jobs

New entrants into the labour force graduates, former homemakers
Important context about the numbers the unemployment rate appears low because Nigeria adopted a new methodology:

Anyone working at least one hour per week is counted as employed.

Nigerians working very few hours or in extremely low‑income informal jobs are not counted as unemployed.

This has led to concerns that the new method underestimates real unemployment that is why Nigerians are struggling in poverty and hardship this method must change in 2026 now

Additional labor‑force insights underemployment Nigerians working too few hours or earning too little is also high.

Combined unemployment + underemployment was reported at 13.5%.

Youth unemployment ages 15–24 is significantly higher, with some reports placing it above 50% under older methods.
