Title: That Day I Finally Asked
Last year, my car died on a busy road. Engine just gone. And my phone? Also dead. I sat there like an idiot. Cars honking. One guy screamed something I couldn't hear. I just gripped the wheel.
I kept thinking it would fix itself. You know? Like magic. It didn't.
For almost an hour I didn't wave at anyone. Pride. Pure stupid pride. I'm a grown man. I should handle this. But every minute I just felt smaller. What would they think? A grown man stuck. A fly landed on my windshield. I watched it walk around. That's how bored and ashamed I was.
Then an okada rider knocked on my window. "You need help?"
I opened my mouth to say "I'm fine." That's what I always say. But something stopped me. Maybe tiredness. Maybe just grace. I don't know.
I said yes.
He pushed my car to a mechanic down the road. Took fifteen minutes. He even lent me his phone. I called my brother.
I spent almost an hour doing nothing because I couldn't say four words: "Yes, I need help."
That's the thing. Pretending you're fine when you're not? It's exhausting. I'm not talking about big philosophy. I'm talking about sitting in a dead car on a hot road, sweating, while a stranger helps you for free. Everyone should feel that. The rolling down the window part. And yes but more importantly the one that humbles you. That kills that pride within.
