Nigeria’s composite Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) declined to 49.4 in April 2026, falling below the 50-point threshold and signalling a contraction in economic activity. This marks the first contraction in 16 months, compared to 53.2 points recorded in March 2026.
The dip was driven by broad-based weakness across key sectors, particularly Industry and Services, both of which slipped into contraction. The Industry PMI fell to 49.5 points, reflecting declines in new orders (49.5) and employment (48.7), although output remained marginally expansionary at 50.2 points. Raw material inventories also contracted to 46.8 points, while supplier delivery times contracted to 50.9 points, indicating lower efficiency
