The International Football Association Board (#IFAB) unanimously approved the issuing of red cards to players who cover their mouths to conceal discriminatory or racist behaviour.

#FIFA proposed toughening the sanctions following the incident between Vinícius Júnior and Gianluca Prestianni in February, in which Prestianni covered his mouth with his shirt before insulting Vinícius. The rule will be implemented at the #WorldCup2026.
