This proverb emphasizes integrity, gratitude, and respect for boundaries when mentored, advising against competing with or exploiting the person who provided opportunity. It means using shared knowledge to build your own success rather than taking advantage of the mentor’s resources, relationships, or personal space.  It is therefore considered a breach of trust to use a mentor's tools against them or to diminish their livelihoods.
