Merit is losing public respect

One of the most dangerous things a country can lose is respect for merit. When people repeatedly see mediocrity rewarded, seriousness starts to look foolish. Preparation looks naïve. Integrity looks slow. Excellence begins to feel like bad strategy. That is how national decline becomes cultural. The damage is not only that the wrong people rise. It is that the right people start adjusting downward.
Once merit becomes optional, decay becomes difficult to reverse.
