Why slavery started across early societies, slavery emerged for a few recurring reasons:

Labor needs as agriculture expanded, societies needed large, controllable workforces. Slavery provided labor for farming, construction, and domestic work.

War and conquest captured enemies were often enslaved rather than killed.

Debt and punishment some people became slaves to repay debts or as criminal penalties.
