Slavery began thousands of years ago, long before the transatlantic slave trade, and it emerged independently in many early societies as they became more complex. The earliest clear evidence appears in ancient Mesopotamia around 4000–3000 BCE, where slavery was already an established institution by the time of the Code of Hammurabi (c. 1750 BCE).
