So why the “38 million tonnes” figure?
It’s an estimate, not a headcount.
It comes from combining:

Nigeria’s total annual food production

Known post‑harvest loss percentages for each crop

Market and storage inefficiency data

Nigeria produces a huge amount of food, but loses a large share due to:

Poor storage

Bad roads

Lack of cold chains

Market gluts

Processing bottlenecks

Because Nigeria is Africa’s largest producer of many crops, it also ends up with the largest absolute losses.
