The Automated Teller Machine, ATM, was invented by an English engineer John Shepard Baron, with the first one installed in Barclays Bank, London in1967.
He abandoned his initial 6-digit PIN for the now globally used 4-digit PIN because his wife, Caroline, had trouble remembering the 6 digits despite several attempts.

But for Mrs Baron you would have to struggle recalling 6 digits any time you're at the ATM.
