She softened, a ghost of a smile touching her lips. “I suppose we are. Now, if you’ll excuse me—”

“Chris,” he said quickly. “My name is Chris.”

“It’s late, Chris. I should go.”

“May I walk you? The campus is dark at this hour.”

“No, thank you,” she said, her voice firm but not unkind. “Goodnight.”

“Goodnight, Chris,” she added over her shoulder.

He stood frozen, watching her silhouette disappear into the darkness.
