who held their programs like scripture. Then there was the drifters: the partners and friends dragged along, looking at their watches and speaking in hushed, bored tones.

But the largest tribe was the socialites. They didn't come for the play; they came to be the play. They paraded in the season’s sharpest fashions. Their smiles wide, practiced, and predatory. For them, the lobby was the real stage.

“How in heavens name are we going to get tickets?”
