There has been an uproar regarding the temporary release of Mallam Nasir El-Rufai by the ICPC from its custody following the death of his mother.

Recall that on March 24, 2026, the Federal High Court in Kaduna remanded El-Rufai in ICPC custody pending the hearing of his bail application.

I have been confronted with questions by some of my friends as to whether an awaiting-bail or trial inmate is entitled to temporary release from custody to attend a funeral under Nigerian law.
