On this day in 1900, one of the most audacious acts of colonial disrespect triggered a massive uprising in the Ashanti Empire (modern-day Ghana).
The British Governor, Sir Frederick Hodgson, demanded to sit on the Golden Stool which was the sacred symbol of the Ashanti soul and spirit. He didn't realize that nobody sits on the stool; it’s so sacred it never even touches the ground.
