2. Everybody expected him to come back and take over his father's business but instead in 1957 he shocked his father by joining the Nigerian army. He was the first university graduate to enlist so he climbed ranks fast. He trained in the Britain, served in Congo in peace keeping duty, by 1963 he was a Lt. Col commanding the army's 5th battalion in Kano. In January of 1966, Nigeria saw it's first military coup carried out by mostly young officers.
