Few leaders shaped modern Africa like Haile Selassie (1892–1975). As Ethiopia’s last emperor, he introduced a constitution, expanded education, and abolished slavery. When fascist Italy invaded during the Second Italo‑Ethiopian War (1935–41), he stood before the League of Nations and warned the world about the dangers of fascism. He helped found the Organization of African Unity (today’s African Union)—pushing for African unity and independence.

Bade: In 1948 Emperor Haile Selassie gave 500 acres (200 hectares) of land at Shashamene, 150 miles (225km) south of Addis Ababa, to black people from the West who had supported him in his struggles with Mussolini's Italy.
