Defection in Nigeria’s National Assembly is not a grey area. The 1999 Constitution is clear. Section 68(1)(g) states that a Senator or member of the House of Representatives shall lose their seat if they defect from the party that sponsored them to another party unless the defection is due to a division in the party or a merger with another party.
One position therefore insists that lawmakers who defect without these conditions must vacate their seats.
