The KGB (Komitet Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnosti) was the premier security agency and intelligence service of the Soviet Union from 1954 to 1991. It functioned as a "sword and shield" for the Communist Party, handling foreign espionage, internal surveillance, and border control. It was disbanded in 1991, with its functions largely taken over by Russia's modern FSB and SVR.
Russian President Vladimir Putin was a long-term KGB foreign intelligence officer.
