Because he failed to love. He was indifferent to the misery of others around him. Lazarus lay at his gate every day - hungry, wounded, longing for scraps - yet the rich man did nothing. His sin was not dramatic evil, but comfortable indifference. Failure to love is the basic definition of sin: to ignore Jesus' commandment to love one another as He loves us (Jn 13:34). Love is not optional in the Christian life; it is the measure of it.
