According to multiple sources citing Fars, the body of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's Supreme Leader for 36 years, who was killed at age 86 in joint US-Israeli airstrikes on February 28, 2026, will be buried in Mashhad, his birthplace and Iran's second-largest city in the northeast.

Mashhad is a major holy site in Shia Islam, home to the Imam Reza shrine (where Khamenei's father is also buried), making it a symbolically significant location for his burial.
