We were told effort rearranges fate.
That discipline is a currency
universally accepted.

So I invested.

Years stacked like invoices,
five in classrooms learning how to grip a pencil,
six rehearsing adolescence,
three studying abstractions
called employability.

The certificates arrived.
The future did not?
