Kaduna was not new to religious tension. In February and May 2000, the city had witnessed violent clashes over the introduction of Sharia law. Hundreds lost their lives, and communities became more segregated. Trust between Christians and Muslims had been badly shaken.

By late 2002, peace had returned but it was a fragile peace.
